The 2009 WIUGC was hosted by the University of British Columbia in Vancouver on January 8 through the 11th. Over 150 graduate and undergraduate students attended, coming from the University of Manitoba, the University of Saskatchewan, the University of Calgary, the University of Alberta, Simon Fraser University, the University of Victoria, the University of Alaska Fairbanks and the University of Oregon as well as UBC. This year marked the 45th Anniversary of the conference. This is an annual student-run event where undergraduate and graduate geoscience students present their research through posters and technical presentations, discuss job opportunities, and learn about recent discoveries and advances in technology through corporately sponsored guest speaker presentations. The WIUGC will be held again next year at the University of Saskatchewan.
The CSEG was a sponsor this year, and provided the award for the best geophysical presentation at WIUGC 2009, which included a prize of $300. This year's winner was Dave Toni, a 4th year undergraduate student at the U of M, for his presentation titled, "Investigating anisotropy in the upper mantle using shear wave splitting from the Manitoba teleseismic array".
Do you have a student event that needs sponsoring? Maybe the CSEG can help! Contact the CSEG by email at students@cseg.ca.
