CSEG Student Industry Field Trip

The first ever CSEG Student Field Trip (SIFT) was held on June 24th, 2009, organized by the CSEG University Student Outreach Committee. Matt Ng, Joel Kotkas, Stephen Kotkas and Dan Perez were the principal organizers of this field trip. The CSEG SIFT enrollment was limited to 35 students and was so popular we ended up having a waiting list. The universities represented stretched from coast to coast, including UVIC, UBC, U of C, U of A, and Memorial. This event would not have been possible without our industry volunteers and the generous support representatives from our sponsors Nexen Inc, Tundra Oil and Gas, and Enerplus Resources Fund.

The purpose of the field trip was to give geophysics students the opportunity to network and attend presentations that will help develop their insight into our industry. Often geophysics summer students get hands-on experience within a single sub-discipline of the geophysical industry. One of our main goals is to develop the depth and breadth of their knowledge of front-end work, geophysical acquisition, processing, and interpretation, so that they can become more productive, educated and effective explorationists.

The Students toured around the city, guided by Bob Parker, to Boyd Petro-Search and Tesla Exploration in the morning, where they learned about front-end work and seismic acquisition. Lunch included presentations from Tom Sneddon (Geoscience Manager for APEGGA) and John Townsley (CSEG Vice President). In the afternoon the fieldtrip continued to Key Seismic and ConocoPhillips, where the students were given presentations on processing and acquisition. The feedback was uniformly positive. A special thanks to Raluca Grosos for taking photos throughout the day.
