2012 CSEG Symposium

Some time back, the idea of honouring local geophysicists was proposed to the CSEG Executive Committee, and a formal presentation for the same was made to the CSEG Executive Committee in April 2011. The proposal was to honour those geophysicists who have distinguished themselves with their geophysical contributions to the Canadian oil and gas industry, enhanced understanding, and are well-known internationally. With active support from the CSEG Executive, a CSEG Symposium Committee was formed to represent, organize and put on such a forum, and the following members were chosen:

Satinder Chopra (Chair)   Arcis Corporation
Lee Hunt   Fairborne Energy
Dave D'Amico   Talisman Energy
Oliver Kuhn   Apoterra Seismic Processing
John Fernando   SAIT
Penny Colton   Sensor Geophysical
Carmen Swalwell   Swalwell Placement
Roger Smith   University of Calgary

The CSEG Director of Educational Services will be the Executive representative to this forum.

A few points with respect to the CSEG Symposium need to be put on record for the purposes of clarification, as follows:

  1. The choice of the individual(s) who will be honoured at the CSEG Symposium each year will be finalized by the CSEG Symposium Committee. This Committee will consider the geophysical contributions of different geophysicists to the Canadian oil and gas industry and name the honouree(s) each year. Nominations and suggestions for honouree(s) could be sent by the CSEG members to the Symposium Committee.
  2. A separate page for the 'CSEG Symposium' would be created on the CSEG website.
  3. Each year the CSEG Symposium Committee will be chaired by a different leader from the Committee, so that a variety of constructive ideas and a dynamic leadership role make the CSEG Symposium a prominent event which the CSEG members can look forward to.
  4. The CSEG Symposium will be held each year in the month of March after the CSEG AGM.
  5. The CSEG Symposium will be a 1-day event, with top-notch speakers selected to address the theme, by invitation only.
  6. A theme will be selected each year based on the geophysical contributions of the honouree(s) and sub-topics identified that can serve as guidance for the focus of the talks to be finalized each year.
  7. The topics for the talks included each year at the Symposium will address the initial technical challenges and motivations, the current state-of-the-art and remaining challenges, solutions proposed and progress made, research methods, and strategies and directions for the future.
  8. This forum will serve as an inspiration for the younger generation of geophysicists, who will learn from industry leaders, get apprised on the work done by them and the follow up efforts to this work.
  9. The CSEG Symposium will not affect other CSEG-sponsored events such as the GeoConvention, DISC or Doodletrain, as the focus of this forum is different.
  10. The CSEG Annual Awards will be a part of this forum, where we honour our geophysicists in a professional manner, rather than the current award process at the AGM.
  11. The first CSEG Symposium will be held on March 22, 2012.
